François de Najac (b. 1971) is a French-American documentary photographer and storyteller.
Born in France, he studied engineering and international relations before moving to New York City, USA, in 1996. He worked in risk management in the Financial industry for more than 25 years. In 2023, he returned to Paris and attended the Creative Documentary & Photojournalism program with Magnum Photos and Spéos.
Through his photography, François explores the transmission of cultural identity across generations in a context of migration, rapid urbanization and greater permeability to global content through social media. He has focused on communities of East and South-East Asian descent. François has on-going projects in Paris, France; New York and Tennessee, USA; Bangkok, Thailand; and Huế, Vietnam.
François is passionate about people. Every single encounter is an inspiring story worth telling --a story about coming to terms with the multiple layers of one's identity; about fighting for the right and the resources to be oneself and unleash one's creative spirit -bref, to exist!
François uses photography as a medium to meet people. Sometimes, a story can be told with the language of photography; sometimes the encounter remains in the form of feelings and words, and becomes a fragment of a larger tapestry, bringing meaning to the stories of others.
François favors candid photography, to let his emotional sensors react to the subject or situation, light and color, without the filter of the mind. François believes that photography can also be a helpful form of expression for subjects though collaborative approaches, especially when words are failing.
